A practical session indoors introduces you to the basics, including a simple way to use a compass. Then we’ll move outdoors for a series of hands-on navigation exercises, including a short hill walk.
You’ll pack a lot of practice into this one-day course. If you’d like more, though, add a second day to spend extra time consolidating your skills in the mountains.

You’ve got a good grounding in the basics. Time to extend your skill-set and make your journeys in the hills more fluent and efficient. Good navigation is about confidence!
Use your compass more while doing simpler things with it. Learn to combine strategies and navigate more efficiently. Develop your ability to visualise the landscape you expect to see at each point of your journey. Learn to match features on the map to those on the ground. Practice a simple three-stage process for relocating yourself if things go wrong.

Going into the hills when daylight hours are short? Confident in your daytime navigation but want to know how to approach night navigation?
Successful night navigation depends both on applying your existing skills more rigorously and on choosing the right combination of techniques. Starting in daylight, you’ll develop your knowledge with practical exercises; as the light fades, you’ll put the right combination of techniques into practice, with a walk into the night.

Coaching from a qualified expert.
I’m an orienteering coach (UK Coaching Certificate Level 2) and a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (MCI/MIA). I tutor and assess Level 1 coaches and am actively involved in the Scottish Orienteering Association’s Coach Education programme. I’ve helped develop the SOA’s Introducing Orienteering course and teach both this and the Scottish Orienteering Young Leader course for the SOA.
I’ve been teaching navigation since 2003 and became involved in orienteering in 2008; I’m an active member of my local Badenoch & Strathspey Orienteering Club. As you can guess, I have an enthusiastic interest in teaching people navigation and improving standards!
As well as running my own coaching business, I’m a freelance instructor at Glenmore Lodge, Scotland’s National Outdoor Training Centre and a tutor for the Scottish Orienteering Association.
